EBONY
Played by: Meryl Cassie.
Series: 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.
Estimated age when introduced: 14.
Tribe: The Locos, the Mallrats, the Zootists.
Family: Java (sister), Siva (sister).
Relationships: Bray, Zoot, Lex, Jay, Ram (husband), Slade.
Quote: "Remember the 11th commandment? Thy shalt not shoot thyself in the foot."
Description: Cunning and manipulative, Ebony always has a hidden agenda. She will stop at nothing to get what she wants, and what she craves more than anything is power. She uses both her ruthlessness and feminine charms to play other people and get what she wants. Sometimes, a softer Ebony comes through, but she always returns to her natural, hard state; confident and calculating.
The big picture: In series 1, Ebony is Zoot's sidekick, and takes over as Loco leader when he disappears. She searches to find him, and believes that the Mallrats are hiding him. She follows Bray to the Mall and is held captive for a while, but learns the truth about Zoot's death. Comes to the Mall with the Locos saving the Mallrats from a firey death after the Tribe Circus attack, and steals the antidote and takes Bray hostage. Ebony's been in love with Bray since before the Virus, and tries to make several moves on him. Goes with Bray after the Mallrats as they're on their way to Eagle Mountain.
In series 2, Ebony finds the antidote with Lex and Tai-San and tries several times to use it for profit, including trying to poison Tai-San and getting Trudy captured by the Chosen and then blackmailing Bray for the antidote formula. She threatens Spike to take the blame for the attempted murder of Tai-San, and he gets his own back by keeping her locked up and then leaving her to die. She is saved by Tai-San, Alice and Cloudy. For a while afterwards shows signs of weakness and a softer side, and tells Bray she loves him. He lets her down in a big way and she's back where she started. At the end of the series, the Mallrats think she's up to something, and the plot thickens as Spike ends up dead in her pool. She flees as she understands that the Chosen are not gone after all, but are invading.
In series 3, Ebony rescues Bray and Lex after the buggy accident and goes into the forest. Runs into Pride and saves Bray again, this time from execution. Goes to the Eco Camp with Pride and the other Mallrats, where the whole story of how she faked Amber's death on Eagle Mountain comes out. She works with the rebels trying to destroy the Chosen's reign. After the fall of the Chosen, she is elected city leader and throws Amber and Bray out of the city.
In series 4, she reluctantly leads the posse attacking the Technos, while at the same time making deals with Techno commander Jay. Meets sisters Java and Siva again, who are determined to get her. Falls in love with Jay, but agrees to marry Ram when she believes Jay has betrayed her. Finally learns the truth and escapes with Jay into the forest, running into the Ecos. Even though Ebony's determined to find a new life somewhere else, Jay changes his mind and decides to go back to the city to fight with Amber. At the end of the series helps get rid of Ram, and starts seeing the long dead Zoot.
In series 5, believing that Zoot's Second Coming is close at hand, she becomes leader of the Zootists and (so she believes) wife of Zoot, making mayhem in the city streets with sisters Java and Siva. Slade helps her realise she's being tricked, and after that she helps the Mallrats be rid of Mega and his allies in the battle of the city. She falls in love with Slade, but is always fighting over him with Ruby in Liberty. Java comes to Liberty to kill her, but in the fight Siva jumps in front of Ebony and takes the shot, and Ebony shoots Java as revenge, and so looses both her sisters. Is evacuated with the others at the end of the series.
JACK
Played by: Michael Wesley-Smith.
Series: 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.
Estimated age when introduced: 15 (I didn't think that could be correct, but apparently it is).
Tribe: The Mallrats.
Family: None.
Relationships: Ellie.
Quote: ...
Description: Jack is the nerd of the Mallrats, who believes that science is the answer for the ruined world the Virus created. Brainy, and with a dry humour, Jack has his own geeky charms. As an inventor with best friend Dal, he makes life easier for the Mallrats, and has a little knowledge about everything.
The big picture: In series one, Jack already lives at the Mall as Amber and the others arrive. Is together with Dal considered the inventor of the tribe, making a water filter system for the rainwater and a windmill that charges batteries for the Mallrats. Is put on trial for keeping food to himself. Breaks his leg in a drunken rollerskating contest at Lex's stag night. Cracks the Hope Island code, realising the code is actually coordinates. Goes to Eagle Mountain with the other Mallrats.
In series 2, Jack and Ellie fall in love and become a couple. They investigate the Virus together, and start the newssheet The Amulet. Starts spying on Ebony when the Mallrats think she's planning something at the series' end. As the Chosen invade the Mall, Jack whimpes out and hides as all around him are taken captive, and help Bray and Lex get the other Mallrats out of the Hotel.
In series 3, Jack is a hostage in the Mall with the other Mallrats, and gets caught by Chosen guards trying to escape, and is sent away to work on the Chosen's alchemy projects. He returns to the city late in the series, and after finding Ellie with Luke and learning that his best friend is dead, takes off again. Is dragged back by Cloe, whom he encounters in the countryside. Ellie and Jack don't make up, but at least come to an understanding after Luke leaves.
In series 4, Jack helps find out who the Technos are and more about them after the invasion. He goes to the stadium with Ebony to find out what cell tower the Technos are using. Jack is captured and shipped off, while Ebony gets away.
In series 5, Jack returns to the city, and after a trip to Liberty, he is at last reunited with Ellie, who has returned from Techno enslavement with amnesia. After a few obstacles, his relationship with Ellie matures. He tricks Mega into believing him on his side by designing Mega's Pain Game, a punishment system. After Java dies, uses her computer pass card to copy Mega's files to pass on to Ram. Escapes with Lex to Liberty, where he continues to help the rebels until the city is won in the final battle. Is evacuated with the other Mallrats at the series' end.
KC
Played by: Ari Boyland.
Series: 1, 2, 3 and 5.
Estimated age when introduced: 11.
Tribe: The Mallrats, the Chosen.
Family: None.
Relationships: None, but has crushes on May and Cloe.
Quote: "Ask me no questions and I'll tell you no lies."
Description: A sly child, KC is always doing deals and wondering how he can make money, often in dishonest ways, ripping people off. He takes advantage of any situation and looks upon Lex as a hero and partner in crime, someone who can teach him something about the art of scams. KC looks after number one, but when it really matters, he shows that his loyalties lie with the Mallrats.
The big picture: KC is accepted into the tribe after having snuck in and robbed all the Mallrats' rooms. Lex is impressed by his skills and takes him under his wing, even though some of the others try to vote him out. When he looses Porky the pig at poker at a gambling den, KC is captured by Tribe Circus who take him prisoner and force him to bring them back to the Mall. As Tribe Circus attacks, saves Zandra from being raped by Top Hat. Goes to Eagle Mountain with the rest of the tribe.
Is in series 2 quite upset when Lex is kicked out, and spends most of his time with Patsy and Cloe. When Trudy returns, he is one of few who is not fooled by her act.
In series 3 is hostage with the other Mallrats in the Mall, and wants to get involved with the resistance, but Alice and the others don't trust him. KC manages to fool the Guardian (who is on the edge of insanity) that he keeps seeing Zoot, and so become one of the Chosen as the Guardian's oracle. KC helps get the rebels in as they're rescuing the captive Mallrats and overthrowing the Chosen. Gets a crush on May and gets a bit down when he realises it'll never happen. As Cloe comes back, he falls for her instead, but the relationship is not allowed to develop as KC is captured and shipped off as the Technos invade.
In series 5, he is at a holding place for slaves and meets Alice and the Guardian.
LEX coming soon...
PATSY
Played by: Sarah Major.
Series: 1, 2 and 3.
Estimated age when introduced: 10.
Tribe: The Mallrats, the C & P Tribe, the Chosen (as a spy).
Family: Paul (brother).
Relationships: None, but has a crush on Dal.
Quote: ...
Description: Though a bit timid in the new world, Patsy also has a bossy self-confidence. She is very protective of her deaf brother Paul. She is playful and sometimes mischievous with the other children. She shows her fears from time to time, but it is mixed with strength and courage for her tribe.
The big picture: In series 1, Patsy and Paul blackmail Jack for food and plays poker for suppies with Ryan, among other mischief. Patsy gets very distraught when her brother disappears, and blames Lex for driving him away. She is the only one who believes him when Jack claims he's seen an adult on the surveillance camera, and goes out to find the old man. What she finds is Glen, who she brings back to the Mall, not knowing he's sick with the Virus. She gets a new "family" in Salene, Ryan and Cloe, who naturally come together like parents and children. Goes to Eagle Mountain with the other Mallrats.
In series 2, Patsy becomes Brady's babysitter, and feels so guilty when she's snatched, and Trudy also blames her (wrongfully, many feel). Patsy and Cloe loose Bob when he accidentally drinks poison meant for Tai-San, and wrongly blames Danni for it, and are angry because they feel the older Mallrats don't take their opinions into consideration. They form the C & P tribe and find a new dog in Cloudy. When Trudy returns after joining the Chosen, she cunningly uses Patsy's guilt for Brady's kidnapping to manipulate her into joining the Chosen. She also makes Patsy lead Ebony into the Chosen's trap. Ebony falls into the sea, and when Patsy thinks she's dead, she realises how bad the Chosen are, and try to make up for it by confessing to Cloe and trying to prevent the Mallrats and other tribe leaders from walking into the trap that's laid for them at a tribal meeting.
In series 3, Patsy faces a dilemma as turncoats Salene and May join the Chosen to, as they say "make life easier for themselves", and try to influence Patsy to do the same. Rebels Alice and Ellie convince her that there is a way she can be with the Chosen while still remain faithful to the tribe. So, Patsy becomes a spy for the resistance, but gets caught in an off-limits room and is sent away. Is by some of the Mallrats presumed dead, but this is never confirmed.
PAUL
Played by: Zachary Best.
Series: 1.
Estimated age when introduced: 11.
Tribe: The Mallrats.
Family: Patsy (sister).
Relationships: None.
Quote: ...
Description: Paul is Patsy's deaf brother, whom she's quite protective of. Despite being isolated by his disability, he is usually a happy child. He is a clever child too, but Lex doesn't like him and always has a go at him.
The big picture: In series one, Paul and sister Patsy are brought to the Mall after meeting Amber and Dal. P & P also find Jack's secret food store and blackmail him for sweets and crisps. When Zoot dies in the Mall, Paul blames himself because it was he who felt the vibrations and alerted Lex that something was going on. Paul one day suddenly disappears, and Patsy blames Lex, saying he drove Paul away because he was constantly yelling at him.
RYAN
Played by: Ryan Runciman.
Series: 1, 2 and 3.
Estimated age when introduced: 16.
Tribe: The Mallrats.
Family: None.
Relationships: Salene (wife). Also has a crush on Zandra, but it comes to nothing.
Quote: ...
Description: Ryan may come across a little naive, and it doesn't help when others, Lex in particular bullies him. He develops more depth as his relationships with the other Mallrats get stronger. He is physically big and strong, but looks are decieving as Ryan is a very caring, gentle, compassionate and loving man. He is protective of his Mallrat family and very loyal towards them, and is a father figure for Cloe and Patsy.
The big picture: In series 1, Ryan becomes a Mallrat with Lex and Zandra and in the beginning seem more like Lex' sidekick than a man of his own. Zandra is with Lex, but Ryan still gets a crush on her. Ryan later becomes Salene's "knight in shining armour" as he helps her overcome her bulimia, and after making a deal to look after eachother, they slowly fall in love. Ryan forms a "family" with Salene, Patsy and Cloe. Goes to Eagle Mountain with the tribe.
In series 2, Ryan's friendship with Lex is almost dissolved as the drunken Lex tries to rape Salene. Ryan and Salene's relationship continues to develop, with a few ordeals. At one point, they don't communicate as well as they should, and Salene has a bulimia relapse when Ryan won't sleep with her. Salene thinks it's because he doesn't find her attractive in that way, but when the truth finally comes out, it happens naturally for them. Salene later finds she's still in love with Bray, and Ryan senses this and is so devastated he thinks about taking his own life. There's also a sequence where Ryan and Salene discuss having children; Ryan wants them, Salene does not. As they make up, Ryan asks Salene to marry him, but she only says yes when she finds out she's pregnant. They get married in a double wedding where the other couple is Lex and Tai-San. Ryan helps the Mallrats attack the hotel after the Chosen invasion.
In series 3, Ryan is captive in the Mall with the other Mallrats. Salene goes over to the Chosen for the sake of her child, but Ryan never does and thinks she's making it harder, not easier as their child would be born a prisoner. As the Guardian's oracle KC says Zoot has children on his agenda, the Guardian decides all children should be Zoot's, which means Ryan will never be allowed to see his child. Ryan explodes when he hears this, and beats up the Guardian. The Guardian wants to execute him to make an example of him, but Luke manages to change his mind, and Ryan is sent away to the mines. He never returns, but we hear he's still alive from Pony Joe, who has come across him on his travels. Salene rides out to find him, but never does.

Sasha lives very much in the moment. He keeps on the move and doesn't believe in staying in one place for too long.
The big picture: Dal meets Sasha at the nomad camp, and they are both enslaved by Susannah and Troy who bring them to the tribal gathering to sell them. They are rescued by Amber and the Mallrats who bring them back to the Mall. Sasha and Amber quickly fall in love (which makes Bray very jealous), and have a short, but happy and innocent relationship. They have an excursion to the beach where Sasha asks Amber to come with him when he travels on. She agrees, but changes her mind at the last minute when she realises that she can't abandon her Mallrat family and her responsibilities towards them, so Sasha goes on alone.

In series 2, Brady is kidnapped by the Chosen, and Ebony tricks Trudy into believing she's getting her back, but in fact handing her over too. In series 3 continues in her role as the Chosen's Supreme Mother, but feels more and more threatened in her position. The Guardian is dissatisfied with her, and after she steps over a line when making a move on him, he decides to execute her. The rebels and imprisoned Mallrats conspire and help her escape, and she only realises the error of her ways when she's sent to Amber. She helps the rebels bring down the Chosen, but some of the Mallrats are reluctant to forgive. As she runs away, Mega corners her and brings her to the hotel and manipulates her to get information about Jay and Amber. Trudy's not aware she's betraying them at the time, and eventually try to help them as their memories are about to be deleted. She holds no grudge against Amber and Jay, knowing she and Jay were not meant to be. She is evacuated with the other Mallrats at the series' end.
